Drawing from imagery in a book inherited from my Grandfather's library, this body of work began as an investigation of the Modjadji (rain Queen) of South Africa. The Modjadji is an ancient and current day matriarchal ruler, who is believed to be able to command and predict rainfall. The original body of work has come to exists as a small, unique series within Karen's greater body work, each piece is the same size (4x6") and in a similar format.
In this series she explores the magical and mystical aspects of not only the Modjadji, but also to female leaders and deities, who command the elements in ancient and modern day cultures. Karen uses the same drawing as the base for each piece in reference to all women having descended from the same African roots, her queens re archetypes to draw from.
